Second Lieutenant Rex A. Rice was from Belton, South Carolina. He was born on June 7, 1917, and he was killed in action at the age of 26. He was serving as the Bombardier.
After the Joe Noyes Crew was lost in September 1943, Joe’s mother, Francis, contacted Rex’s mother, and they both played a large role in contacting the other families of the missing airmen.
In recent years, Joe’s nephew, Tom Noyes, was able to scan some of the insightful correspondence between the Rice and Noyes families. A truly delightful Southern lady, Marguerite “Punky” Rice, also contacted me at some point and sent me the photo below.
